Walk into many kitchens across the Greater Toronto Area and you’ll see the same issue.
There’s a gap above the cabinets.
Sometimes it’s 8 inches. Sometimes 12. Sometimes more.
At first, it doesn’t seem like a big deal. But over time, it starts to affect how the entire kitchen feels. The space looks incomplete. Like something is missing.
Even if everything else is in good condition, that empty space makes the kitchen feel older and less refined.
The Problem With That Empty Space
Most builder-grade kitchens were designed with standard cabinet heights.
The goal was speed and cost, not finish.
So instead of running cabinets all the way to the ceiling, they stopped short. That left a gap at the top.
What does that do?
Even a well-kept kitchen can feel unfinished because of this one detail.
The Right Way to Fix It
In this project, the gap was about 12 inches.
The goal was simple. Make it look like the cabinets were always meant to reach the ceiling.
The solution was not to replace the cabinets. That would be expensive and unnecessary.
Instead, we built a custom 12-inch box above the cabinets.
This box was designed to match the width and alignment of the existing cabinets, so everything stayed clean and consistent.
Once that structure was in place, crown moulding was installed around it.
This step matters.
Crown moulding creates a smooth transition from the cabinets to the ceiling. It hides joints, softens edges, and gives the entire top section a finished look.
After installation, everything was painted to match the kitchen.
Now it looks like one continuous system.
What Changed After the Upgrade
The difference was immediate.
The cabinets now appear taller.
The ceiling line feels cleaner.
The entire kitchen looks more complete.
There is no visual break anymore.
Instead of seeing a gap, your eye moves smoothly from the cabinets up to the ceiling.
This gives the kitchen a more solid and intentional look.
It also brings the space closer to what people expect from newer, higher-end kitchens.
And the key point is this.
The cabinets were not replaced.
The layout did not change.
But the feeling of the kitchen did.
The Bonus Upgrades That Completed the Space
To take it a step further, two additional upgrades were done.
Pot Lights
New pot lights were installed in the ceiling.
Lighting plays a big role in how a kitchen feels.
With better light:
It makes the entire kitchen feel more modern.
Ceiling Paint
The ceiling was also repainted.
A fresh coat of paint does more than refresh the surface.
It sharpens the edges.
It reflects light better.
It makes the whole space feel clean again.
Combined with the new crown moulding and lighting, the ceiling now feels like part of the design, not an afterthought.
Why This Type of Upgrade Works
This is not a full renovation.
There was no need to remove cabinets or change the layout.
Instead, the focus was on one weak point in the kitchen and improving it properly.
That’s why this type of upgrade works so well.
You get a strong result without tearing the space apart.
The Takeaway
If your kitchen has a gap above the cabinets, you’re not alone.
It’s one of the most common issues in homes across the GTA.
The good news is that it’s also one of the easiest to fix the right way.
By extending the cabinets visually and finishing them with crown moulding, you can change how the entire kitchen feels.
Add proper lighting and a clean ceiling, and the space comes together.
Sometimes it’s not about doing more.
It’s about doing the right detail properly.
Final Note
This project was completed by Brampton Crown Moulding.
The focus was simple. Clean work. Proper fit. A result that looks right and lasts.
If you’re looking at your kitchen and feel like something is missing, it might be this detail.
